The came from a most trusted member of El Pipeline.

The WWL has raided newspaperdom yet again: agreed to deal today with Heather Dinich of Baltimore Sun to help cover ACC for espn.com. part of massive blogger-type initiative that will include a lot of hires in both college and NFL. already landed Chris Low, formerly of The Tennessean and rivals, to cover SEC. more to come. many more to come.

Moddy again - I said yesterday that the next few weeks were going to be very, very, VERY interesting.
Heather is a great get for them and a big loss for newspapers.

Only been around Heather a couple of times, but the Terps fans' hatred of her seemed really, really unfounded.

Geez, Maryland. Women can write sports, too.

Good for Heather!

One of my favorite reporters in the Mid-Atlantic to read during basketball season; does a great job covering the Terps.

Great hire. Heather is smart, talented and one of the nicest human beings on the planet. This is a great move for her, but -- fearless prediction here -- it's only a step toward even bigger things.

Not only is she great in print, but she does a terrific job on her blog for The Sun:

I've seen Heather at several Maryland football and men's basketball games. Not only is she good at what she does, but she's always been approachable.

The Sun's loss is ESPN's gain, but hopefully, I'll still see her at other games.

She's a very nice person, but she is honestly not very knowledgeable about UMD sports. As someone that follows it closely she often messes up very simple things and overall the Baltimore Sun is nowhere near as good as the Washington Post in their coverage. I do really enjoy her blog though.

Agreed about Washington Post being better in its coverage--Prisbell is one of my favorite college beat writers in the country.

Eric Prisbell now actuallly is the national writer, but I wholeheartedly agree about Prisbell. I think he is a superb writer and does not get a lot of the recognition that he deserves.

BTW there is a difference between a typo on a message board and a factual error in a newspaper.

Doesn't Eric do national football and Maryland basketball?
Or has that been changed?

If I recall correctly Mark Schlabach did most of the national college football and college basketball coverage. Prisbell was free to cover national interest stories and recruiting and such, but focus primarily on Maryland. Now he will be doing national football and basketball.

Schlabach has been gone from the Post for at least two football seasons.

Dinich has done a great job for the Sun.  And her coverage of the Terps football team this year has been lightyears ahead of the Post's, which seems to rotate its coverage between Maryland, UVA, and Virginia Tech daily instead.  Great pickup for ESPN.  Plus, she's a heck of a nice person.

The Post has cut back its coverage of Maryland football, and Heather and Pat Stevens at the Wash Times have dominated the coverage as a result.

And Moddy, Prisbell does MD hoops and national football.  Marc Carig has been on Maryland football, while Adam Kilgore does the Virginia schools.

My bad you are right about Schlabach. As I've said I think Dinich does good things with her blog and maybe that is the sole goal of espn.com is to get an ACC blogger, but if they want someone to write in-depth features I believe there are multiple better writers in the ACC for it. But in the end it may have simply come down to the fact Heather is young and does have a good amount of potential.

He's a little behind, DD.   Still reading Schlabach in the Post.

Are you sure about Carig? Unless he recently was moved away from men's hoops, I remember he covered the Terps for the Post last season.

No he didn't. It's impressive though how many people feel qualified to comment on who covers the Terps better when they don't know who the beat writers are.

I definitely remember reading Prisbell's work about Maryland and Kilgore's work about the VA schools--and Carig seemed to do the other DC-area schools, mostly George Washington.

I stand corrected then. I remember seeing Carig at Comcast Center for the men's games a lot.

I don't know Heather personally, but I've heard lots of good things about her from people, in and out of the business. (Knew some folks from back where she was in Pennsylvania.)

Always was a little underappreciated when she worked in State College.
