But, slappy, 5 out of the 6 teams in the SEC East are ranked in the top 25. Sure, they play weak non-conference schedules, but it's overshadowed by the fact that the same teams are playing each other in conference, and that a lot of the SEC teams are playing 5-6 teams that are/were ranked at one point this season. Add to it that Tennessee played CAL, UF plays Florida State, Kentucky played Louisville (granted, not much to brag about now), and Auburn played USF, and I don't think there are many holes in the argument that Hawaii, playing an average SEC schedule, finishes mid-pack in that conference at the best.
Horsehockey.
The SEC this year is like the Big Ten last year -- two or three really good teams and the rest are overrated.
The Pac 10 this year is like the SEC last year -- some outstanding teams (Cal, Oregon, USC, Arizona State) and some better than average teams (Washington, Oregon State, UCLA) who will win conference games they shouldnt because on the others despite a poor record in conference.
I dont buy the SEC beats up on each other so its a great conference crap -- this year anyway. Alabama, Georgia and Arkansas don't deserve to sniff the top 25 right now and Auburn, Tennessee and Florida are 15-25 at best.

I can agree that some of the SEC teams are overrated simply because they are in the SEC. But I still don't think Hawaii is a good enough all-around team to merit a top 10 ranking. Just as Rutgers, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Florida, and so on and so forth have proven that they aren't.

The only difference is that Hawaii doesn't really play anyone that can expose them like the other teams do.

There are at least a dozen teams in college football that would walk through Hawaii's schedule while barely breaking a sweat.

Keep in mind that the problem with the Hawaii's, Boise State's, and South Florida's of the football world is not always a soft schedule, but that perennial powers know how good they are and back out of deals or won't get into them.
Michigan's game with Appalachian State, for example, is a direct result of Michigan backing out/buying out of a deal with Hawaii. Who knew?

For the record, I did not double vote but did have a miscommunication with Slappy over my use of USC vs SC for the Trojans and Gamecocks respectively. I honestly had never heard anyone refer to the Gamecocks as anything but SC.

Another thing for Hawaii is the time change. Does anyone know when they leave the islands for a mainland game? Wednesday? Thursday? Any of you in WAC country got a handle on this one?

Heck, even a couple of hours difference takes me a day to figure out, much less 5-6-7 like they have to do.

I don't know what day they leave, but I do know that when they played at La.Tech and UNLV on consecutive weeks they stayed on the mainland.

yes... but the point difference was negligible.
Not surprising really since Illinois wasn't ranked and Wisconsin was fifth. If you feel the difference makes a difference, you'd have to put Stanford ahead of Southern Cal.

Good Doctor,

No, my eyes just looked in the wrong place where I wrote my poll.

Illinois was ahead of Wisky the whole time. I just typed it in wrong. Sorry about that, slappy.

Not quite the same, slap. Illinois is 5-1 with wins over Penn State, Wisconsin and an up-and-coming IU team. Its only loss is to ranked Mizzou.

Stanford ... well ... let's just say its win came as a bit of a shock.

True, I know what you're saying, but think of it this way. Drop Wisconsin 10 spots for the loss and they are at 15th. Move Illinois up 10 spots and they would be at 21. 10 spots either way is a pretty big jump, but Wisconsin was 27 spots ahead of Illinois so it has a big head start

By SLAPPY 4428
SJ.COM POLLMASTER

To: Slappy 4428
From: Wise Lucasman, Fearless Leader
RE: SJ.com football poll.

Dear Slappy,

It has come to my attention that you are running a poll for American football of some sort. While I represent another sport in my line of work, I'm told that doing this is a good thing in our effort to make sj.com a destination on the web and not one of those places that merely pays lip-service to sports like Yahoo or shills for sports it carries like ESPN.com.

Along those lines, I've come up with a list of a few suggested changes to make sj.com more credible among people who care about football instead of futbol.

1. I see where South Florida is ranked fifth in this week's poll. As you may know, I went to South Florida. Are you sure fifth isn't too low?

2. I see where Florida is ranked No. 13. To clear up any confusion, please change the name to Gainesville Community College or North Florida College of Limited Knowledge. That team has more losses that USF does, don't you know.

3. California is ranked second. When did it become a varsity sport at Cal? Did the school cancel rugby for a demonstrative lack of talent?

4. Shouldn't South Florida go in its spot? It doesn't have rugby, but I did get a rug burn there once.

5. I see Stanford won some kind of Big Game against USC. Please make sure to spell out all references to the University of Southern California so people don't confuse USC with USF.

6. Ditto for South Carolina. I'm sure you can understand the confusion -- those acronyms are for losers. After all, you can't spell 'Y-o-u S-u-c-k' without USC.

7. What about third? Shouldn't USF at least be third?

8. Attached is a color style chart that might look good with the poll. Am sure our readers would love to see it written in Green and Gold.

9. I know what you're thinking. It's just a coincidence.

10. Please avoid all references to the Kansas mascot as the "Blue Bird of Cocksuckery." After watching the game on Saturday night, "cocksuckery" is hereby the exclusive domain of Tommy Bowden.

11. OK, Maybe it could apply to Gary Pinkel once Missouri loses. And that turf in Boise. Oh, Mike Greenberg. Forgot about him.

12. Fourth. USFourth has a ring to it.

13. Am told that UCLA lost to Notre Dame. Please inform me of any members who voted for UCLA in the past two weeks of the poll, so I can recommend them to w&n@lw@y.com No one there knows anything about sports, either; birds of a feather and all that, you see.

14. If South Florida wins another game, be sure to talk about possibilities of the going to a bowl. Not bowling, but to a bowl game with cheerleaders, bands and other frivolity. Am told popular destinations would include, but not be limited to, Shreveport, Detroit, Birmingham and El Paso.

15. Maybe you could have a guest columnist; perhaps the goof ball who adores Brittney Spears. His 15 minutes of fame are up just like Kansas State's.

16. Do we have a coach of the year? Am told Jim Leavitt is quite good at taking average kids and making them better. Who does Nick Saban think he is anyway? He complains about academic standards, while accepting a "student-athlete" whose high school had to change a grade to make him eligible. I'll take my 3-point-Oh from USF and kick his little 3-foot-Oh ass.

17. Err, butt. I meant to say butt. I'm sick to death of the asses on this site.

18. Please explain why Michigan keeps winning and dropping in the poll at the same time. We need to keep the Wolverines in the public eye as much as possible because they are a lightning rod for attention. Perhaps a loss to Purdue would move Michigan back into top 25. Arrange that.

19. Also, you do understand this is a football poll, correct? While I’m not the biggest football knowledge guy around, there's no way Indiana, Illinois and Cincinnati would ever be in a football poll.

20. Upon further review, first. South Florida should go first. After all, this place is predicated on bull.
