Interesting note from Boston tonight, where veteran Boston Globe football and boxing writer Ron Borges has decided to retire from the Globe.

Well, his two-month suspension was up recently. I suspect he was pushed/encouraged to make this move.

I don't think you'll ever see another boxing columnist at the Globe.

When George Kimball took the Herald buyout in 2005, he essentially become the paper's boxing subcontractor. He does a weekly notes column and freelances selected East Coast fights. It wouldn't be a shock if Ron did the same for the Globe. Were I, God forbid, a big city editor, I might try to handle boxing coverage that way. It's the purview of a small group of experts, where public interest spikes only occasionally.

So, are we actually buying the notion that someone who was suspended for two month returned, wrote one column, and just decided it was time to call it a career, and there's nothing more to it?

So what if we add in the fact that the Globe felt compelled to announce this in a short press release that was released on a Friday night, which did not even mention he was coming off a suspension? Nothing fishy about that, either? Are you actually employed in journalism?

Ron, it's a pleasure. Thanks for stopping by.

Do we totally leave out the fact that while on hiatus from the Globe, De La Hoya hired him to write for his Web site during the big fight recently? Hmmmmmm. I wonder if that had anything to do with this?

And I'm sure on warcorrespondents.com's "Iraq topics only" thread, they're chattering away about the war. This, however, is sportsjournalists.com's "journalism topics only" thread. That would seem to be an appropriate place to discuss why one of the biggest names in sports journalism suddenly announced his retirement right after coming off a plagiarism-related suspension, and why said writer's employer felt compelled to use the PR trick of releasing this news on Friday night.

A valid question:
If the Globe released the news on, say, a Wednesday, how big of a reaction are we talking about?

"One of the biggest names in sports journalism . . . "

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Maybe, MAYBE, one of the biggest 1,000 . . . MAYBE

AP's gotta be Ron.  Gotta be.

(And, no, I am NOT one of the biggest 1,000 . . . difference is, I know it.   Self-knowledge is a wonderful thing.
More should try to cultivate it).

He's a very well-known guy, on the level of sports writers who aren't on ESPN all the time.

Here is what I found disappointing: The Boston Globe story should at least have noted that he had recently been suspended. Especially since the plagiarism followed high-profile cases at the Globe in the past (Barnicle, Smith, etc.).

Far from it, Woodward (or is that Bernstein?). Something seems fishy about this episode. Why would Borges call attention to that?

Yes, because the Globe has an Obligation To Its Readers to put this in 20-point type above the fold on Monday morning.

Okay . . . but "one of the biggest names of sports journalism" remains a gross exaggeration, when discussing RB.

At least we'll be spared those NFL notes columns, with those endless references to "my good friend: thus-and-so . . .

Uh, the reader doesn't care.

Next.

Though it's not what it was, the  Globe remains one of the handful of must-read sports sections in the country, and he was in it.

C'est le vie.

This is total speculation, but my gut tells me an internal investigation turned up more incidents. If Borges was in such denial that he appealed the Globe's ruling of plagiarism in this one case, then I have to think he's done it before simply because he so ardently tried to justify the one time he got caught.

If he got caught working for a source while he was suspended .......... well, that's good enough for the big --30-- right there.
