PALMER, MASS. - Turley Publications, Inc., publisher of 13 traditional weekly newspapers reaching 130,000 readers in western Massachusetts, seeks an immediate full-time sports editor to oversee the entire department. Candidates should submit a one-page cover letter answering this question: what role do you feel sports should play in small weekly newspapers, and how would you as sports editor facilitate that vision? A resume, three professional references, and 10 clips demonstrating your writing, editing, and page design experience are required. We seek applicants with at least five years of newspaper sports reporting experience, a college degree in journalism or related field, as well as two years performing sports editing and staff management at a professional newspaper. This is a writing editor position. Our sports editor not only covers games, manages the budget, and pens a weekly column, but also assigns stories, copy edits text, writes headlines, and proofs final pages in production. A full-time sports writer and photographer, and a talented freelance team of correspondents and photographers produce all content. Knowledge of high schools sports and the western Massachusetts landscape is a plus. Turley Publications, Inc., based in Palmer, Mass., offers a competitive salary, paid vacations, 401K plan, flexible schedule, mileage reimbursement, fun atmosphere, and frequent training opportunities. This position would be based in our Ware office. Deadline for all applications is March 2. Email all stuffed materials as Word, JPEG and PDF files to:

Turley Publications, Inc., Executive Editor, Tim Kane, 92 Main St., Ware, Mass. 01082

tkane@turley.com

All emails will be confirmed. If email is not an option, mail submissions to the above mentioned address. No phone calls, please.

Do they also expect you to take out the trash and vacuum the floors?

Tim's a nice enough guy, trust me, but the things they're asking you to do for this gig are a little overboard.

Everything but chisel the section into a stone tablet.

And five years' experience, including two managing personnel? Methinks they're aiming for Venus.
