Serious answer...the attitude just rubs me the wrong way.

The first time I saw you posting on here you were involved in a discussion with a female and you enraged her by asking her to call you "big daddy" or "big poppa" or something along those lines. She wasn't particularly amused and quite frankly neither was I. And I'm sure you know what they say about first impressions.

I will freely give you credit for being a very talented writer and columnist who's not afraid to tackle controversial subjects as well as a tireless self-promoter (that in itself is certainly not a bad thing). You may well be a wonderful and thoughtful human being but, in my humble opinion, the image you project here is not a pleasing one and actually borders on caricature. It threatens to detract from the qualities that have made you a success.

I'm sorry if you or anyone else disagrees with me but that's how I feel. And I thank you for taking the time to ask.

Interest to KC readers? We are all global sports fans, right? One thing I do question is the sense of humor factor out here? I really have to agree that he has a good time with issues and sports. It just seems that too many folks on this board need to get a little bit of a tickle and readjust their fun meter. Jason writes with life. Most of you need to start living. Stop moaning like a bunch of poodles. Go bowl, work on your putting on your rug or watch an adult film.

A question for thebiglead:
You can print "bitch," but bleep out "shit"?

Completely valid question. Normally, we let the expletives fly ... but we wanted to keep Whitlock's responses obscenity-free.

Huh

You know, if you call Webby 'big daddy' he lets you post here for free. You guys may not all know that.

I love--LOVE--what whitlock has brought to sj...the melodrama and angst over some of his posts is the greatest barometer of the Dopey Factor on this site.

I laugh everytime he snips at posters for being anonymous...on an anonymous message board.  The guy knows how to have fun, and he knows how to make people squawk....I admire a guy who can take an unpopular opinion and stand by it.

Page 2 is a wasteland.  Good move by AOL.

What's interesting is...  (Sorry if it's already been brought up - I'm too lazy to read the entire thread) ... AOL and SI have the same parent.  If AOL Sports is trying to beef up it's sports coverage, wouldn't that (ostensibly) take hits from SI.com?

AOL/Time Warner.  One of those b.s. "synergistic" mega-mergers that just didn't work out, did it?

Can't see how it would...AOL is just there, you hop around on it while you check your email.  SI is a destination. People don't have to choose one exclusively.

And AOL does not have Peter King

I loved the interview and Jason's candor, but am I the only one who found his use of the word "bojangle" and its variations highly amusing? I understood it in context, but it's definitely not a word I come across on a daily basis.

It becomes tiresome when he's also adding references to Stepin Fetchit and Kunta Kinte. How does he expect to be able to participate in an "intelligent discussion of important racial issues" when he's constantly throwing around stuff like that?

you gotta love this place. it took most of the day, but after much thinking and constant research you came up with a way to criticize. "thebiglead.com" is the equivalent of addressing congress. what was i thinking? i'm embarrassed. i regret answering the guy's e-mails. and yes, mr. petty, i was run out of page 2. they couldn't wait to get rid of me.

keep hope alive!
yup - enjoy making change at the 7-11 large one.

What the heck, Tom Petty and all you Whitlock-haters?

The guy does everything you want a columnist to do, he writes about issues that are compelling and compels you to read them -- even if you had no passion in the issue to begin with, he tackles issues no one wants to touch, and he writes in a way that isn't middle-of-the-road and which threatens to polarize some of his readers.

I don't always agree with him, but big deal. He passes my honest meter a helluva a lot more than other columnists I read do, even though he's often accused of the opposite.

My only two knocks are that he sometimes writes about things that aren't really of interest to his KC readers and sometimes he works his pimp hand on his own member too often in stroking his own stuff. But so what? I'm just as guilty of the same shit, I just don't have the same audience.

To make a statement like "enjoy making change at 7-11?" That's just clueless.

I have few complaints about what he does as a columnist.

To me, however, his monumental pomposity outweighs his talent (no pun intended). Sorry if the Whitlock lovers disagree. See, the last time I looked, I'm allowed to express opinions like that, whether I sign my real name to them or not.

I'd rather read Whitlock's pomposity than Scoop's.

Screw the Scoop-bashing, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. I loved his smackdown of Loopy.

Yeah, but a fish with a regular column in one of the most prestigious national publications. We will not rest until Scoop is gone. http://www.scoopwatch.blogspot.com

Tom, my point is, they're making a lot of bigtime hires, like Yahoo, to become a player in that space, which is why it might be a fun thing to be a part of now.
nbcsports.com is doing the same. It's a good time to be in the online sports business.

AOL Sports is apparently hiring a lot of people in general, not just big-name columnists -- and they're based in D.C.,  not podunk.  Anyone here get a call?

That after they shitcanned probably 40% of their staff within the last few years.  Selfishly, it just didn't happen in time to bounce enough of their good softball players off a team that bounced mine in the playoffs.  7-0 leads meant shit when your bats run cold after the second inning.

But in all seriousness, if they're hiring more people then good.

Being an AOL man myself, it's good to see his mug on the home page when I log-on.
His take today on Stu Scott's MNF patronizing of Jay-Z is dead-on.
Stu's hip-hop crap is disgusting. To me, anyway.
Disgusting and annoying.

I had the same thought as JW when I heard DJ Stu call Jay-Z by his "Jigga" nickname.
