The sports desk at the SCMP has three openings that might interest folks here -- one generalist reporter job and two production editor positions, one all-rounder and one focusing on horse racing.

Full disclosure: I work at the Post but on a different desk. I can help answer general questions about the Post and life in Hong Kong. Questions about the open positions should be directed to SE Joshua Ball at joshua (dot) ball (at) scmp (dot) com.

To try to get out ahead of a few likely questions:
    • The Post is not Chinese state media, despite what some sections of the internet might tell you. Hong Kong has much more autonomy than the mainland with its own laws, visa requirements, etc.
    • While the overall SCMP newsroom's focus is digital-first, the positions in question will have you doing work for both the print and digital editions. Being a production editor typically involves editing copy, adding online elements, and writing as needed.
    • Chinese-language skills are an advantage but not necessary to get hired. Knowledge about sports popular outside the US -- soccer (a.k.a. football), rugby, cricket, F1, etc. -- is probably at least equally important.
    • Hong Kong is an expensive place to live, but what the Post pays should easily cover your cost of living as long as you don't insist on a palatial estate and eating nothing but food imported from the West.
    • Tahoe is still just 15 short minutes away.
