You read that correctly, a newsroom that’s putting effort into agate.

JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Chief Agate Clerk

Interesting nugget from the ad: “Our metrics show that our dedication to agate and box scores is an asset in retaining our readership and gaining new subscribers.” Remember when word-driven news organizations did everything well?

I interned in the newsroom almost 20 years ago (ouch) and it seems like almost anyone I knew is gone and Lancaster had grown, but I learned a ton from great people and there are way worse places to live. You’ll be 75 minutes from Philly, 90 from Baltimore and two or three hours from New York and D.C.

About the only place left in central Pennsylvania that isn't being driven into the ground by the big chains. Hanover, Lebanon, Chambersburg, both York papers -- all now depleted Gannett outlets.

Lancaster's sports hole isn't real big, but they do take their agate seriously. And at least three good former Harrisburg colleagues seem to be happy in that newsroom.

I live in Lancaster County and happily subscribe. I cannot another paper covering an area of a half-million people that has the kind of resources this place does.

So the last agate job is in the capital of Amish country. Makes sense.

The capital of Amish Country is in Ohio. Then comes Indiana.

One thing I love about that region is how it is intertwined so closely with agriculture. Central Market in Lancaster and places like that always have good stuff, not to mention all the farm stands. I didn’t grow up with that and didn’t learn to appreciate it until later.

My wife works for an Amish company. The owner’s son owns an electric installation company. The other son has a 3-D printing business. In the barn, of course, because you can’t have that stuff in the house.
