The Montana Standard, an 8,000 circulation daily in Butte – the nation’s largest single historic district — is seeking a sports reporter to join a two-person staff dedicated to covering a region with a rich sports heritage. Our new hire also will collaborate with staff from around the state to produce content for Lee Montana’s rapidly growing 406mtports.com website as well as sports sections in Billings, Missoula, Helena and Hamilton.

Butte is a resilient mining city with a colorful personality and a passion for sports that extends to Anaconda and a dozen smaller communities where high school athletics (and rodeo) are king. Two city high schools and the NAIA’s Montana Tech and Montana Western anchor our coverage.

Duties include providing game/feature reporting, page trafficking and immersing yourself in a community that cares deeply about sports. We emphasize content that will be well read not only in the Standard’s extended footprint but all of Montana. Periodic coverage of events of statewide importance for 406mtsports.com and the other four papers comes with the job.

Social and digital media skills are essential. The ability to take photos/video also is a must, and you’ll be provided with the equipment to do it.

Once one of the most raucous mining towns in America, Butte is reinventing itself into one of the region’s most livable and affordable communities. If you’re into outdoor recreation, the Butte/Silver Bow region is heaven: Fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking and a variety of winter outdoor sports opportunities are just outside your front door, and Yellowstone National Park is a short drive away.

The Standard is an equal opportunity employer with an excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, paid holidays and vacation. Salary depends on experience. Visit our websites at www.mtstandard.com and www.406mtsports.com to see our work.
