One of the few things that came to mind was that some mid-major gigs – Murray State and Dayton, for starters – have been better springboards than some of the crap power conference jobs. But could a guy like Odom potentially turn one of those hired-to-be-fired higher-level gigs into a destination?

Tony Bennett did that in Charlottesville. Scott Drew did that in Waco.

Are you comparing Utah State of the Mountain West to Virginia of the ACC? Or am I misreading this?

No way. Not even apples to oranges.

The Virginia and Baylor references were jobs at Power Five schools that have gone from junk to treasure. Neither are to be compared to Utah State.

Shit, look no further than Roy Williams himself. He followed the Dean (indirectly) and did fine.

Chapel Hill was ANYTHING but a hired-to-be-fired place.

To me, the only question is how they'll help Hubert if the program struggles in the next season or two. Did they learn anything from how they tossed Matt Doherty in front of the train? Also, will Roy try not to loom over Davis the way Dean Smith's presence clearly affected Doherty?

They tossed Doherty because he was a jerk. And a jerk whose team quit on him.

Doherty also wanted changes in the way the program was run, which resulted in a bunch of pearl-clutching. Doherty could have done some things better. Dean's leftovers could have let the current coach actually do things the way in which he wished to do them.

Keep in mind that the 2005 title team was all Doherty's recruits. Yes, Roy was the coach, but Doherty set the table.

Utah State might not be a Top 5 mid-major job but I feel comfortable saying it is Top 10.

That's fine, but who's taking over the Fox News Sunday gig?

Former Nebraska coach Tim Miles the frontrunner for the San Jose State gig.

    A true hired-to-be-fired job.
