He's young, he's white, he knows Sean McVey.

Those are the key things to have on a resume these days.

It's an against-the-grain hire for certain, given the trend toward innovative offensive geniuses (whether they actually are or not is another thing).

The Chargers need to make certain they don't waste Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen. Brandon Staley must make a strong OC hire.

Being young and white is key. These owners are Trumpists in almost every case. And they are not gonna hire Black people. They’re digging in their heels.

I'm guessing it is progress that fully half of the coordinators on the teams playing next Sunday will be black - pretty sure that's never happened before - but some teams do seem to go out of their way to avoid hiring black coaches. NY Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Redskins (not counting interims so Robiskie doesn't count, but Rivera IS Latino), Falcons, Panthers (see Redskins), Saints, Seahawks (Flores), Rams, Ravens (they've only had three and all served a purpose and worked out more or less so you give them a pass, but hiring Harbaugh a one-year DB coach, longtime special teams coach was kind of odd), Jaguars (Del Rio), Titans/Oilers, Texans and Patriots. A lot these teams (almost half the league) have been around a lot longer than others (some with the same owners) with many hires being dubious at best. Not saying they're racist or anything, but their histories are noticeable and worthy of comment. Particulary now when you do have several successful black coordinators - and that the league doesn't seem to have a problem giving the gig to position coach at that. Isn't most of a HC gig these days supervising assistants and keeping a handle on the locker room/team culture?

    From USA Today:

Four franchises – the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – are responsible for 32% of all the Black and brown coaches and GMs hired in the past 30 years, while Atlanta and six other teams have not had a single person of color in either of their two most important positions.

The one time a minority candidate has a decent chance is when a team knows it's going to be terrible and facing a few tough years. If anyone hires a Black coach this time around it's going to be the Texans. They'll be fired in two years.

The timing on this seems... odd. Like, the Patriots had a pupu platter of shit on offense this year. It isn't entirely his fault, but it's not like he made chicken salad out of chicken shit, either.

I don't know - Dad finally agrees to promise you the family Porsche after he's gone but only after he blew out the cylinders. Taking over a dynasty is one thing, might as well strike out on your own at this point. If he won at NE, even revived them to a playoff contender - Belichik would get some of the credit even years into a potential retirement "He built the system."
