I think that’s how it started but the Red Wings have been using it for everything

Borrowing against future earnings - basically a payday loan on an NHL contract. At that point, he may have already met the definition of insolvent.

I have never found him interesting or particularly insightful on the air and will not miss him at all. But I do find it kind of fascinating, as a comment on where we are nowadays, that the joke that ultimately caused his departure was based on what I think is an unassailable factual premise, which is that young single male athletes with lots of money will seek female companionship, and that in normal times it will be readily available. Obviously in today's age he ought to have known better than to make that joke, but the level of outrage it created was bigger than I would have predicted.

I think the fact that he was a terrible GM, a terrible analyst and had previously sloughed off domestic violence as “unfortunate” made this a bit of a last straw. I don’t know anyone who likes Milbury.

I feel like part of the “outrage” was opportunistic. Hockey fans weren’t going to pass up on the chance to send him packing.

Earlier in the bubble tournament he had said on the air that the teams playing in the empty arena was like a college women's hockey game.

I do agree that his baggage was part of this in a way that's hard to separate out, but even considering that it seemed the level of outrage caused didn't seem to fit the crime.

This is a guy who's best known for hitting someone with a shoe, and who tried to have Chris Nilan play in an NHL All Star game. It probably doesn't say great things that he held on to such a prominent role in the hockey world for so long.

I had totally forgotten about the Nilan thing.

Ovechkin with no goals, two assists last night. He didn’t have a 0-2 game all last year.
