They actually did join, but never played a game in the league. From 2019, here is a good look back at Boise's brief membership in the Big East -- why they did it, why they left immediately, and some hints about this recent dalliance with the AAC.

Boise State still wrestles with the results of its Big East backtrack

Exactly. Revenue will be better, but results? Not sure.

I believe San Diego State was also trying to join the Big East at that time.

South Carolina has dropped out of the Sarsaparilla Bowl.

Florida gets hit with some awfully harsh penalties for what seems like some modest recruiting violations.
The coaches crossed paths with a group of 127 high school players touring the facility while passing through town. In another violation, they contacted a player too early (before his junior year) and met with him while his high school coach was in the room.
For that, Dan Mullen got a one-year show cause penalty and Florida got a laundry list of restrictions on its recruiting next year.

Florida football program violated NCAA recruiting rules

Mullen, who instigated a fight at halftime of a game this season? Fuck him.

Mullen, who whined like a beaten puppy after the A&M loss, bitching about how Gator fans should fill Florida Field the next week (to be immediately shot down by the AD), only to come down with the virus himself? F*ck that guy, seconded.

Charley Pell can go to hell as well.

Win with dignity and grace, because you're representing not only yourself, but your team, the institution and everyone associated with it. Lose the same way.

This is wild. It never went public. They have already served their time.

The original plan was was to bring in Boise, TCU and San Diego State to join the “original” eight of Pitt, WVU, Syracuse, USF, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Louisville and UCONN. The football schools felt they needed a strong 12th member to create two six-team divisions and lobbied for UCF (despite bitches and moans from USF). Instead, in an attempt to lick the assholes of the basketball-only members, Commissioner John Marinatto approached Villanova about moving its program to Division-1A. This after the football schools spent a good six years lobbying for more security after the 2003 ACC raid.

it was then that Pitt, Syracuse, WVU and Rutgers started started looking for any and all available life rafts. When they bolted, Boise, SDSU and TCU decided to stay put.

They better have a charter/private plane - I imagine every Boise flight goes through SLC/Denver.

But apparently Harsin won’t need that airport.

Remember. It’s all about the “student-athletes.”
