    I think
First, as noted by Spartan, it was not legal. A penalty was called for illegal forward pass, but the Rams declined it as the result of the play made it fourth down.

Brady threw a pass that hit a defensive lineman and Brady caught the ricochet. He then threw a pass downfield that was caught by Evans, who was tackled short of the first down.

Penalty declined, play assumedly went down as a Brady completion to Evans.

Edit: Here's the play description from the official NFL gamebook:

    3-10-TB 34 (12:17) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short middle to 12-T.Brady to TB 25 for -9 yards. T.Brady pass short middle to M.Evans to TB 42 for 8 yards (J.Johnson III) [M.Fox].
Penalty on TB-T.Brady, Illegal Forward Pass, declined. Statistically, no completion for first pass as a result of the declined penalty.

ESPN crew missed a chance to share a well-worn stat nugget on a favorite topic. Brett Favre's first NFL completion was to himself in this manner.

Love the last sentence there. Points are an afterthought when judging an offense.
