Can someone explain the LAFC-Orlando goat screw today?

I wasn't watching but my Twitter timeline exploded.

    From my understanding...

It went to penalty kicks. On one of the kicks Orlando's goalie made a save but VAR detected that he came off his line early. He already had a yellow so he was tossed from the game.

Orlando had to put a field player in goal for the finish of penalty kicks. He made a save and Orlando won.

Yes, and apparently one point of confusion was that though Orlando had a sub left after their goalie got sent off, the rules say the lineups are locked in once you go to penalties. One very MLS-sy wrinkle was that a first straying off the line in PKs isn't a yellow in the 2020-21 rules because of that very scenario, but we're not on the 2020-21 rules because of MLS's calendar and the season starting when the 2019-20 rules were still in effect.

That was a ridiculous error by the MLS officials regarding the sub.

A friend had suggested last week that right before the shootout starts, an MLS team should sub in their backup keeper because the chance that a keeper is sent off with these rules is greater than the chance it would get to the 10th taker

Oof ugly clash of heads between David Luiz and Raul Jimenez. Jimenez is still down after several minutes.

And David Luiz was allowed to continue

It was an awful look. He was bleeding through his bandage but the official didn't make him go off. Then he doesn't return from the half. He clearly shouldn't have continued.
