    Give it time, someone will go lower. These guys are so crazy good, playing with space-age equipment on pristine courses. And most of those courses have virtually no defense. Add in benign conditions and fugeddaboutit. Three months ago, DJ won the Northern Trust by 11 shots at THIRTY UNDER.

    Asterisks aren't real and records are empirical. He deserves the record because he set the record.

    It's just a record. As far as I can tell, nobody in the top echelon of golf really cares about low score records because they're all aware of how much conditions determine low scores. When DJ blew away TPC Norton (not that tough a track for those guys, for us yes) he had a 60 in one round and made pars on a few real birdie holes down the stretch as the announcers babbled about him shooting 57. Asked afterwards if he was thinking about setting that record, DJ replied, "not really."

    Well, not at Norton. Certainly at Augusta he's thinking about it.

    It's a number. (I've argued under par here for years.) Played in a one-off year seven months from when it's normally played. It's a bit of of an asterisk, but it's still a green jacket and in five, 10, 20, 50 years, no one will say, "Yeah, butttttttt" like they will about the Dodgers.

    Other than it was played in November, why isn't this a record?

    Played at Augusta

    Played against course conditions that fluctuate day-to-day and year-to-year

    Played against the pressure of playing against the best of the game

    Played against pin placements set up by the guys who always set it up

    In a sport where it is physically impossible to recreate every little detail every year, why didn't he set the record?

    I was not at but heard about the Masters where the CBS announcer on one hole where golfer X was facing a tough shot said, "what is going through Golfer X's mind right now?" and Mark Whicker responded "how about a 20 mile an hour gust of wind."
