I read "Ironhead Heyward" in John Madden's voice and I feel great now.

This one is great bc it can be easily repurposed, to such an extent that when my buddies and I are taking too long to do just about anything -- shoot their darts, play their cards -- we say things like, "Let's go, Hargrove."

    BTW, some others:
    Minister of Defense
    Nigerian Nightmare
    Mean Joe Greene
    David "Deacon" Jones
    Slinging Sammy Baugh
    Johnny "Blood" McNally.

In the newsroom one night, I did the Merton Hanks snap-neck strut thing — perfectly — and after that my neck ached for two weeks.

    Dominique: Human Highlight Reel
    Darryl Dawkins: Chocolate Thunder
    Jack Tatum: The Assassin
    Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain
    Tom Terrific (Seaver, not Brady)

Someone mentioned Henri, but his nickname only exists due to the original: Maurice "Rocket" Richard.

Also mentioned earlier I believe, but The Iceman may be the best of all time.

Chamberlain's real nickname (he loathed Wilt the Stilt) in Philadelphia was The Big Dipper, which he had painted in script in diamond dust on the side of his custom-built Maserati.

Which, of course, begat this photo on the Giant Dipper roller coaster at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk when Chamberlain was with the Warriors.
