According to the essay, the "technical details, frankly, are the easier part."

What's the current valuation of forty acres and a mule calculated at a reasonable rate of interest since 1865?

Four days later, Sherman signed Field Order 15, setting aside 400,000 acres of confiscated Confederate land for freed slaves. Sherman appointed Brig. Gen. Rufus Saxton to divide up the land, giving each family up to 40 acres.

And it wasn't in the order, Elmore says, but some also received leftover Army mules.

10 generations of white people living the same basic existence from the Ohio River valley, through Appalachian Trail in miserable day to day existence and poverty and who consistently vote against their interest are too stupid to be burdened with reparations. Want reparations, tax the shit out of slaughter houses of the Midwest, the farms of the south, the coal mines of Appalachia. Reparations from the wrong doers are called restitution. Reparations from non-wrong doers is spiteful and objectively wrong.

I’m not against reparations. Let’s do it. At the very least, let’s study how.

Lincoln signed it, was assassinated shortly there after and Johnson immediately rescinded it in the vein of helping those poor plantation owners driven off their land because they reveled.

The 1619 podcast has a really sad story of a Black sugar cane farmer, whose family were successful farmers for generations, got driven off after having a routine crop loan (that farmers regularly get) get dicked around with. The farmer claims the Farm Bureau found the bank actively changed paperwork to lessen the amount of the loan and wouldn't release the money until well after planting season.

There are ways to make things advantageous for African-Americans without writing them checks.

Like, I don't know, let them coach, manage, run and own sports franchises in leagues where they are and have been active participants.

There are about 120 teams in the big four. There are 40 million Black Americans. That's tough math

Not just at the college level.

Have you ever seen a Black youth league administrator before? Because I've not.

All these jobs big and small and paid and unpaid need to start opening up. No Rooney Rule bullshit that gets sidestepped.
