Short of starting a new thread (and we aren't) ...

SAY we've got an August 1974 moment coming. (It's not. Play along.) Who do the Republicans run after, as mentioned earlier, the circular firing squad? No way it's Pence. Nor is it Romney.

    Mike DeWine or Condy Rice.

Thune was who I was thinking. But the Trump base is staying home for the McCains/Romneys/Kasichs on the ticket. No chance Jeb! gets on the ticket. (Again: Not happening)

My question is whether the circular firing squad's actions amount to retribution of Trump or simply an admission that he's not a viable candidate.
Romney is out under any circumstance because he has already had his shot and because he dared cross the lord and savior before it was fashionable to do so.
Beyond that, I have no idea what this would entail. That klan would have to make a calculation: Do they want a Trumpist candidate who's younger and not as demented, stupid and inclined to chop off his message? Or do they want a more normal human, one who can appeal to a broader audience?

If the virus keeps spreading at the rate it has and we can't see some reasonable progress on racial issues, the Republicans are going to run as far away as possible from Trump the next cycle. He's that toxic.

You may be on to something there.
DeWine's credibility is tied to his ability to resist the Imperial Wizard and mitigate the Trumpandemic. The logistical question is whether he starts losing that battle simply by running and diverting his attention from Ohio.
Rice has been smart. She hasn't had a whole lot to say. She hasn't rebuked the Wizard.

If you’re the GOP, do you just throw in the towel and try to convince some non-entity to take one for the team, get clobbered, then have everyone else rebuild for 2024?.

You throw in a Senator who isn't up, who doesn't have baggage, doesn't have anything to lose - but mainly is there to keep the Republican majority in the Senate. Thune is in a "safe" state - he's not going anywhere, other GOPers might want to hang back and see how things settle out and get some distance from their Trump votes before they make a play for the White House.
