    That is why I was thinking him. I remembered some controversy about how many seasons he had, but couldn’t recall the details.

    I did not cheat. I thought it was Dizzy Dean, checked his Baseball Reference page and found I was right. Sort of marginal qualifications as a pitcher, career shortened because of injury, but I guess the HOF also considered his broadcasting career and general impact on the game, which in the 1930s was monumental.

    It's stunning how many relief appearances quality starters made in those days.

    Yep, that’s who it is.

    He had, like, three great years another two pretty good ones, a good half-year with the Cubs, and that was it.

    I went to Cornell more than 15 years after he left and people said that even by the standards of football players who were shoehorned into the Hotel school, he was remarkably stupid.
