“We’re not competing in Tokyo this year” thread

Canadian Olympic Committee announces it won’t send athletes to Tokyo if games are held as scheduled. Not sure if they’re the first.

I totally get the logistical nightmare postponing the games would cause. But how can you even hold them without holding Olympic trials in the various sports? And athletes can't even train properly right now.

Agree 100%. I suspect we’ll see a flood of similar announcements this week, ultimately forcing the IOC’s hand.

 

It'll be postponed until 2021 by the Japanese government in the near future. Only solution.

 

People are really jumping the gun on this. It’s probable that it will burn itself out globally by the end of June. It’s just way too early to make a call.

 

See above post. You can't train for an Olympics and hold scores of trials in the span of a month. It's about that as much as anything.

Only if the government has its hand forced. The Abe (national) and Koike (Tokyo) administrations have sunk a huge amount of political and social capital into the Games; they're supposed to be the crowning achievement of Japan's recovery from the Fukushima triple disaster. Calling it off themselves would be hugely damaging to their standing, but if the IOC and/or other nations force it upon Japan then the government will have sufficient cover.

 

It's just a postponement due to unforeseeable and dire circumstances. It shouldn't be considered as a negative reflection on Japan and its government in any way. It's a much smaller event of course, but they postponed the Ryder Cup a year after 9/11 and nobody even remembers that now. Treat this situation as what it is, a cosmic rainout.
