Well, there are four. I did not realize Nevers played MLB. But he was not one of the three I thought.

I will be away from Internet the next four days so here is the answer:

    Dixie Howell, Alabama, 1935

    George Halas, Great Lakes, 1919

    Rick Leach, Michigan, 1979

And Nevers (but he played for the Browns, was that really MLB?)

Halas is the crazy one to me.

Also, since I went to look up who they were, Dixie Howell never made it to the majors. There was a Dixie Howell in that same era, but a different guy.

Everyone knows that Kareem Abdul Jabbar gave the performance of a lifetime in Airplane, but what other LA sports star originated the co-pilot role in Zero Hour!, the move Airplane cribbed from?

Looked it up, would never have guessed. Dude got pretty good play in the credits. Don't remember ever seeing it. He must have had a decent role.

Not Steve, but Garvey does have this scene.

Yeah, he holds up well in a strong cast.

Of note, the person who originated the Ted Stryker role was Scotty from Star Trek. It was a radio broadcast in Canada before it became a movie.

Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch, wide receiver for the Rams. I actually rented "Zero Hour!" from Netflix a few years ago, and when I saw his name in the credits, I was like "Oh, so that's where the idea of casting Kareem came from."

BTW, which pro athlete did the "Airplane!" producers originally ask to play Roger Murdock?

    Correct.
And I believe it was Pete Rose, or at least he claimed it at one point.
