With Steve Bedrosian closing out games for Bruce Ruffin, who seamlessly replaced Steve Carlton in the rotation after Carlton went out on top by leading the Phillies to one more championship.

Speaking of Bedrosian, the Phillies sure did spawn some random Cy Young Award winners in the 80s, didn't they? With Bedrosian and John Denny? And they also sort of had claims on Willie Hernandez and Mark Davis, who pitched for them at one point before winning it. Hell, they traded Hernandez the year before he won it.

1984: nl mvp (sandberg) and al mvp and cy young (Hernandez). The cubs starting eight had sandberg, dernier, Moreland, Matthews and Larry Bowa. That could have been a damn Phillies championship.

Eleven of the 40 mlb MVPs and cy young winners of the 1980s were Phillies at some point.

To be fair, there was a reason why that Cubs team had so many former Phillies.
The tragedy of those Phillies was that they didn't hang on to the guys you mentioned who should have kept their NL East dynasty going for another six or seven years. Right when a lot of them were ready to play, in 82-84, they weren't quite ready to cut bait on the older guys that still had a couple of years left in them. They rode the old guys until they dropped, squeezed that one last NL championship out of them, and then petered out for, really, the next 20 years. The 1993 World Series run was awesome, but was also a total fluke.

to move this along, Steve Carlton, Sparky Lyle and Mark Davis. Does not include John Denny, Steve Bedrosian and Willie Hernandez.

Wow! I wouldn't have guessed Lyle and Davis in a million years.

Not a question, but all four current major North American sports champions are first time (Nationals, Raptors, Blues) or first in a long time (Chiefs) winners. Wonder when the last time was there was such an array of newbies.

This is a good one. Mlb skews it since the majority of its teams had titles before the other major sports even had leagues.

1980 with the islanders and Phillies comes to mind, but the raiders and the Lakers already had titles.

1948 also has the Eagles, whoever won the nascent nba and the indians who hadn’t won since 1920.

1989: flames, pistons, ah crap 49ers and Oakland.

In 1969, the Jets won their first Super Bowl, the Mets won their first World Series and the Knicks began their march to their first NBA title. The only outlier was Montreal winning the 1969 Stanley Cup.

1999: Spurs and Stars won their first titles ever, Rams won their first SB and first title in many years. The outlier that year was of course the Yankees.

EDIT: Nope. I thought he won a batting title, but he didn't.
