Running 2020 PGA Tour thread

Despite a vaccination in September, I was diagnosed Friday with Type A flu. It’s oddly reassuring to watch something that’s moving more slowly than I am.

As long as the broadcast team shows the proper reverence to the Masters the jackets don’t care about color and personalities. The course and the players are the story. It’s one tournament that doesn’t need hyping.

 

Why, you might say it's a tradition unlike... Ah, never mind.

 

Faldo is a double dipper, in that he appears on NBC-owned Golf Channel as well as CBS. I wonder if his partnership with the looser GC crew and its host Terry Gannon has led to his freer commentary style on CBS. I mean, it's all relative. A radical in golf commentary is someone who when a ball lands in a very bad spot for the next shot, states that the golfer screwed up rather than "tough luck."

 

I also have to imagine advertising concerns factor in to golf analysis. I imagine sponsors don't like companies they are paying money to ripping the people who are using their gear.

 

Phil is Callaway's biggest name. I'm sure they weren't happy when the announcers yesterday kept noting Phil was flying the green by 30 yards or more on his approach shots, but the commentary was all about Phil, namely he kept trying to hit it high in a high wind rather than going low. It was all about Phil, not Callaway. What the companies pay attention to on those broadcasts, and what they love, are the close-ups before putts where you can see the label of the ball the golfer plays, their ball.

 

Kuch was flawless on Day 1 at Riviera. Guessing he won’t be a factor on Sunday. ATM.

Woods wasted a hot start but still in the mix at 2-under.

Feels like he’ll get No. 83 this year. But doesn’t feel like this week.

 

My man Lanto Griffin shook off a couple of tough weeks to finish inside the top 10 at Pebble. Even-par start at Riviera, T42. Hoping for at least a 68 today to make the weekend and sneak into the mix.
