Which is why it very well could be bullshit.

Not that A.J. Daulerio would ever feed the masses bullshit.

I'll need a little more detail than that.

I tried to give the guy the benefit of the doubt by reading it. But 500 words in, he was still stuck in passive-aggressive, self-pity mode. Get to the (%*$)( point.

The guy made a joke about child porn in court testimony. Awareness isn't his thing.

Perhaps. But she did tweet out his version and that’s the only reason any of us saw it (because who would subscribe to his mail chimp newsletter?) so it seems she found some truth in it.

This issue has actually been one of my hobby horses here for years (and you can find rants I made about it using the search function) because it annoyed me greatly how frequently Deadspin/Gawker alumni tapdanced around it every time they talked about how a billionaire destroyed their website. Peter Thiel was/is a bad guy, but AJ gave him the loaded gun that killed them all, and they don’t think the two are related but they definitely are, it’s just less heroic to acknowledge the first part.

It was the whole culture. Greg Howard was calling white guys mayo in articles, and when I sent Tim Marchman an email about it, saying that's racist as shit -- after Howard wouldn't respond -- Marchman didn't answer me; he posted my email to Twitter and then Howard called me out on Twitter and said I was snitching. And so instead of being men about it, they had the droves attack me. Hah. Works better with people who give a shit and care about their social media imprint. Like, they thought enough of my opinion and knew who I was, but fuck if they'd be on the level in discussing shit. Nope, just went nuclear on Twitter. Fucking lame.

They're both on the list. Howard is a coward who lets white women walk him off the sidewalk -- and he's also a sexual predator who was on the Bad Guys in Media list. He's now in Australia looking for a Coke bottle. Marchman is now a putz for Vice. In short, they have no careers and I laugh.

Notorious board racist calls a black man a racist, then drops a racist comment on him to close out his screed. True brilliance.

I'd agree with you if Deadspin/Gawker lost popularity with readers because AJ Daulerio was an asshole and people stopped reading because of him and it died that way. That wasn't the case.

The site remained immensely popular through Daulerio's time there and beyond, which is why I disagree with your characterization of how it went down ... It really was brougt down because of Peter Thiel spending millions of dollars in a shadow litigation campaign to destroy Nick Denton through any means possible because of a vendetta.

Daulerio may have handed him a loaded gun with his ill-advised deposition in the Hogan case, but that case should have never been in a court of law in the first place, and constitutionally, what was a first-amendment case should never have been allowed to come down to a jury awarding ridiculous financial penalties that could effectively shut down a site, because they found the editor to be an unlikeable jerk.
