I never realized or appreciated that even with all the theatrics, killer fills and expansive drum kits, - his drumming was always squarely based on the snare. Though his work with the bass drum was phenomenal as well.

His work on the Rich tribute albums is great:

That's the one thing that always stood out with me. His concert kits were massive. Nothing was ever rushed. Incredibly talented.

Celebrity deaths never bother me much, as I...well...can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend, but this one has me in my feels a little bit.

I introduced Peart and Rush to my daughter as we drove home from her basketball game last night. She was impressed with his solos and downloaded several albums, which will tick off her mother.

    One loss, two wins.

“It’s about being your own hero,” he told Rolling Stone in 2015. “I set out to never betray the values that 16-year-old had, to never sell out, to never bow to the man. A compromise is what I can never accept.”

Best drum solo I ever saw. Christmas 1989, Maple Leaf Gardens. Tragically Hip opened for them.

...and it wasn't for show. He used every piece of it, and flawlessly.

    It was ALL good.

What, IMO, set him apart from the others was understanding the role of a percussionist, not merely a drummer. Listen to "The Spirit of Radio" .... the glockenspiel. The "plywood" in "YYZ" ... the tubular bells on "Xanadu" and "Closer to the Heart."

He was nicknamed "The Professor" for good reason.
