I do hope Utah makes the playoff. Their lines can match up with SEC, Ohio State and Clemson teams - not so sure about their DBs though. They'd have a better shot against Ohio State.

 

USC is ranked, in both the weekly polls and the CFP poll. It was not ranked at the time it defeated Utah, but its standing at the end of the season is a far better barometer of the type of team it is than where it was in week 3 or 4.

LSU is an outstanding team. But I've always believed if you don't even win your conference championship, you're not Final Four worthy, and a loss to Georgia should disqualify them. Other's gas mileage may vary.

 

Should. But it won't. Then again the fastest way to an 8-team playoff is if LSU loses to Georgia and drops from 2nd to 5th/6th.

 

Think of the money you could have made on a prop bet that Alabama and SMU would end the season with the same record.

 

Considering where they were in September and October, Tennessee has had a hell of a season. To win five in a row, finish 7-5, and wind up in a bowl after people were feverishly calculating the buyout for their coach is a remarkable turnaround. Maybe not enough to throw a parade over, but certainly worth getting excited about. They pulled off the season equivalent of rallying from a 21-point deficit at halftime.

 

It could be very, very hard to find even three teams with less than two losses but more than one win over the final Top 25.
Clemson will have no Top-25 wins after demolishing Virginia and knocking the Cavaliers from their brief stay in the rankings.

The teams with exactly one loss will likely be Utah and the Big 12 champion.
The Utes will have exactly one win over a Top-25 foe: Oregon in the conference title game.
Oklahoma will probably have two: both over Baylor. They'll have three if the committee decides, by reverse engineering, to keep Oklahoma State in the final rankings to burnish the Sooners' resume and give the chairman a talking point.
Baylor's will be Oklahoma and perhaps the aforementioned Oklahoma State Cowboys.

If it loses to LSU, Georgia will still have three Top-25 wins: Florida, Auburn and Notre Dame. But the Dawgs will have two losses and will be out unless the committee breaks with precedent and gives in to the SEC/CBS/ESPN din.

 

Clemson is opening as 29-point favorites over Virginia. Wonder if that's a record for a conference championship game?

 

FSU was a 30-point favorite over Duke in 2013. They covered, winning 45-7.
