The thread on obscure sports trivia is cool, so let's start one on American history.

This president's wife and only daughter both died within a month after he left office. Who is/was he?

    I’ll guess Fillmore.

In a similar vein, this president’s mother and first wife died within a few hours of each other on Valentine’s Day.

There should be a No-Google bar on replies here.

So, is this the feel-bad twist to the Dolly Madison story?

Off the top of my head, there were no protocols for John Adams, the vice-president, to follow when in Congress. So, at first, he would wear a small ceremonial sword and an outfit that looked like the uniform of a Gilbert and Sullivan admiral.

Yes, Fillmore (who lived in my WNY hometown for some time). His wife got sick at Pierce's inauguration and died of pneumonia; his daughter caught cholera and died.

How many U.S. states were there when George Washington took the oath of office for his first term?

P.S. Love the idea for this thread.

Going to agree this has the makings of a very fun thread. And no idea on any of these answers so far.

I always liked history. After reading some of these question, I'd say history doesn't like me. I got no idea.

The obvious answer should be 13, which makes me think it may be 14?

I'd be happy to see some contributions from our Canadian friends as well.

No, not 13 or 14. Fewer than either.

Not going to give up the answer, but I did just learn about Vermont that I never knew.
