If you'd given me 99 guesses, I would have come up with Don Drysdale wearing 53.

Cue up the Hershiser Hall of Fame rant.
He will have the highest number (55) and should be in the Hall of Fame.

I looked it up after my (wrong) guess and was surprised that the Astros have retired more player numbers than the other three early-60s expansion teams combined. The Angels only have three players (plus a coach and owner) and Mets only two players and two managers and the Senators/Rangers have two and a manager.

Three of the four retired Nolan Ryan's number, and he played for all four.

    ASTROS
    5: Jeff Bagwell, 1B
    7: Craig Biggio, C/2B/OF
    24: Jimmy Wynn, OF
    25: Jose Cruz, OF
    32: Jim Umbricht, RHP
    33: Mike Scott, RHP
    34: Nolan Ryan, RHP
    40: Don Wilson, RHP
    49: Larry Dierker, RHP

    ANGELS
    11: Jim Fregosi, SS
    26: Gene Autry, owner
    29: Rod Carew, 1B
    30: Nolan Ryan, RHP
    50: Jimmie Reese, coach

    METS
    14: Gil Hodges, manager
    31: Mike Piazza, C
    37: Casey Stengel, manager
    41: Tom Seaver, RHP

    RANGERS
    7: Ivan Rodriguez, C
    26: Johnny Oates, manager
    34: Nolan Ryan, RHP

I know Goose Gossage was 54.........can't think of anyone higher than that in right now.

guessing Nolan Ryan is the only player whose number is retired by 3 teams. Not counting Jackie Robinson, of course.

My god, Jose Cruz? Don Wilson? The Toy Cannon? That is pathetic. Fine players all, but retiring their numbers is just admitting your franchise has largely been shit.

Was Boog Powell 66? Not sure if his number is retired, though.

There is one other player whose number was retired by three teams. Who is he?
