I watched that. It was pretty good. The best line is from Shane, who essentially said that things were working, then his dad got involved.

The Cageside Seats reviewer for last night’s Smackdown made an important point. Vince said that everyone had to pay attention to his words and not assume. Then, when setting up the gauntlet, he never said that Kofi would get the title match if he won.

I was thinking that a Dusty Finish could actually work in this storyline, and, if Kofi wins next week and not get the title shot because words matter, that would be the equivalent of a Dusty.

My fantasy booking: Have Sami Zayn return and then hide behind the announce table or something. Basically he's forgotten about. Then have Hawkins be the last guy in the ring and start celebrating. As he celebrates, Zayn runs in and throws him over the top. Hawkins loses it, comes back in ring with a chair and destroys Zayn. New, darker Hawkins convinces Ryder they need to have a harder edge to win, and they turn heel and win the tag titles.

Yep. Would be curious to see how it would've done if was streaming only like they originally planned it to be. Essentially WWECW became NXT.

So, if Kofi does go to Mania and does beat Bryan, where would the expected ovation rank? Greater than Bryan beating Orton and Batista in New Orleans?

That is something right there. At WM30, Bryan overcame the Authority and all the odds to win the championship.

In a couple weeks, Kofi is trying to overcome the Authority and all the odds to win the championship ... against Bryan.

That's what I was thinking, and why I think it often gets a bad rap. Yeah, it wasn't the old ECW. Nothing could be. Frankly, nothing should be. But in terms of being an evolutionary step in the WWE's developmental system, it was a big leap. It bridged the gap from the OVW days to the modern NXT farm system. It gave some overlooked guys a chance to shine and helped some younger ones gain valuable experience (Sheamus and Punk were two of the biggest beneficiaries of it, IIRC).
It didn't quite work like everyone would have liked, but it certainly served a purpose. Maybe it hadn't been branded as ECW, but as something else, it would have done better.

That’s one of the things that Heyman and others said. If they hadn’t called it ECW and had just tried to make it what NXT is today, it would have worked. Instead, they got ECW-lite, which made nobody happy.

    Son of a bitch.

Two f'ing years of one of the greatest feuds in recent WWE history, and this is the only payoff we get for probably a year.
