Bob Costas is like most of us - excellent in some ways, overheated in others.

His voice on a Saturday afternoon baseball game always fit for me.

I heard him do a game on MLB Network with John Smoltz late in the season this year and it was very enjoyable. Hope he does more like that.

I agree with that. If he sticks to baseball and not pontificating, he's a pleasurable listen.

He'll be almost exclusively at MLB Network now

I always enjoyed his Costas Coast to Coast radio show that was aired on Sunday nights in the late 80s.

A lot more influential than people realize when it comes to sports broadcasting. Sports broadcasts were "serious business" before he brought some lightness and wit to a game telecast or pre-game show.

You're right of course, but was Uecker the "lead" guy on MNB? PxP guys were the straight men for the most part.

Hell, Uecker was the arena announcer for Wrestlemania III.

Mel Allen, Harry Caray. Those were pioneering play by play guys. Costas was the in the vanguard of pinheads/statheads. Nice conversationalist, sure, but not in the same ballpark when it came to colorful play by play guys. Does he even have a signature call or moment? If so, what is it?
