A Fateful Crossroads: What Caused the Crash That Killed 16 Canadians?

Bob Gallant, an oil worker from Saskatoon, stood at the junction, gesturing toward an oversize stop sign with a red blinking warning light. “How do you miss that?” he said.

“I came up here thinking that I’d see two little country roads,” he added. “But it’s wide open.” ...

Many people said they assumed that the truck driver passed through Highway 35’s stop sign before being hit by the bus. Others suggest that the truck driver, who had only recently completed his training, may have encountered a problem when turning his vehicle left onto Highway 35 and was struck because of a moment’s inattention by the bus driver.

But no one knows, and there is no obvious explanation. On Wednesday it claimed another victim: Dayna Brons, the team’s athletic therapist.

The crash, which also injured 13 people, occurred at about 5 p.m. The skies were clear, and the highway free of snow and ice. For the truck driver, the sun was directly ahead as he headed west on Highway 335. But at that time of day, it is still relatively high in the sky.

“People are asking: ‘Is this a really dangerous intersection?’” said Art Lalonde, a farmer who is the top elected official of this small rural municipality. “Well, it’s not. You can see for miles and it’s absolutely straight.”

Have heard a few interviews with parents on local news and almost all have expressed empathy for the driver saying that he has to live with it too. One mentioned that he has a young family to look after and does not want to see him in prison for a long time.

There is also an undercurrent of racial tension around the story (not espoused by the parents.) There is a lot of migration from South Asia to Calgary. The company was Canadian-Indo owned and the training he was provided to operate the truck by the company was sub standard. Builds on previous resentment in some parts about new immigrants undercutting everyone else and using a family and friends workforce to get around existing regs. Throw in that Sikhs have traditionally been drivers (and bodyguards) and there is a bit of an elephant in the room about the whole situation.

The guy accidentally killed 16 people. I know people want their pound of flesh, but the punishment of living with the knowledge of what you caused is pretty severe, too.

That’s assuming the accused has a conscience, and that can’t be assumed these days.

I think we are safe in saying the majority of people would feel crippling guilt

He's consumed by guilt, according to the stories.

Not that it ultimately matters, but I looked up how this year’s team is doing. They’re second out of four teams in their division with a 23-14-2-1 record so far.
