Supposedly that’s why $aban stays in college
He wanted to sign Drew Brees as a free agent when he was with the Dolphins
    Doctors overruled him
They traded for Daunte Culpepper instead
Nobody overrules Saint Nick at Alabama

The Lions ran a run and shoot offense in 1991 with Rodney Peete as the quarterback. Mouse Davis was the coordinator. The Lions beat Dallas 38-6 they year before the Cowboys won the Super Bowl to advance to the NFC Championship where they lost to the Redskins.

In most franchises if you had an offensive coordinator who was that successful with Rodney Peete playing quarterback you would given him a new contract. But the Lions fired Davis and changed the offense because it was felt it was to hard to protect a lead in a passing first offense like the run and shoot.

The Lions have not had many leads to protect since then.

This whole myth that Saban would have won 15 Super Bowls if he just had Brees is maddening.

    Jake-
I am old enough to remember when the Patriots (and the Colts for that matter) were one of the true shit-sucking corporate entities not just in pro sports but in the country.
    And of course the Bucs.
These things always have a way of changing with ownership.
When the Lions win it all (and they will) someone else will become the Lions.
Washington is already well on its way there.

    I tend to agree.
I think Big Game Bob is legitimately scared he's gonna drop dead on the sidelines like his old man did.

And there have been very few winning teams who ran the run and shoot since then.

True. Defenses caught up to it (the zone blitz is the biggest reason). But the Lions tanked immediately. Because very few offenses were going to make Rodney Peete look good.

Barry Sanders and Herman Moore and Johnnie Morton also made Rodney Peete look good.

To 3OF’s point: It’s an abomination what the NFL has allowed to happen to what was a premier franchise.

The Lions scored 339 points in 1991 and 273 in 1992. Moore and Sanders both had statistically worse seasons in 1992.
