I agree they shouldn't, I just don't see him not going to free agency.

Good thing you won the title because that contract's gonna blow up in your face

17m/year is a paper cut to the Red Sox.

Without knowing anything close to other deals out there, what is the proper package for a guy with one year left on his contract who is a step beyond his peak

As Derrick Goold has reported, the Cardinals take the stance that it’s just a trade for one year of a player. If Goldilocks is the difference in making the playoffs, it’s a success.

They didn’t give up the farm by any means.

Maybe it’s a way to attract Harper? Or, I’m reading way too much into that?

I think Harper is going to the highest bidder, unless it's a truly negligible amount of money between a contender and non-contender.

Nothing says they have to trade him now.

    No, just infielders...

If the Cards bow out of the Harper sweepstakes, this smacks as a kick the can down the road move. They have talked (and talked) about needing a transformative player, the face of the franchise, since Pujols left. Getting Harper would accomplish that. Arenado next year or Trout when he’s on the market, too. There aren’t many, is the point.

If you don’t go big this year, when do you? With 3 million to 3.5 million fans coming every year, they’re drowning in cash. They have the money, but do they have the will?

Next year they have at least these contracts ending, baring re-signing one or more: Goldy, Ozuna, Carpenter and Wainwright.

I know this means absolutely nothing, but....
