That one seems out of right field.

The Cards have been working on that deal for a few weeks, per the Post-Dispatch.

They did not give up any of their top guys, either. Weaver fell off the map pretty quickly in St. Louis.

Seems like he could fare well in NL West, though. He’s got good stuff.

Weaver was great in his rookie season — well, pretty damn good anyway — but he fell off a cliff last season and got pushed to the bullpen.

Cards have a better catcher than Kelly coming up.

    Know nothing about the infielder.

Pretty good get for STL, especially if they can sign Goldy to a two- or three-year extension. Clears some room on the 40-man, too, so they can at least try for Harper.

Why would Goldy sign for such a short term?

I was just throwing out numbers that the Cards would be comfortable with. If he’s looking for a five-year deal after next season, it won’t be with STL. Besides Molina and the corpse of Adam Wainwright, Cards aren’t signing players for their declining 30s years.

MLB isn't the NFL or NBA. There is very little added benefit to having a player as he enters FA. The Cardinals were trading for 1-year of Goldschmidt, that's it. Whether he signs for 2020 is irrelevant to judging the trade.
