    Thanks for reviving this thread, YF. It was very interesting, and I didn't join until 2013, so it was all new to me.

    I've never thought of asking a source not to talk to other reporters, for any type of story. I've had sources say, "I'm only giving this to you," but I wouldn't be comfortable asking them to keep something exclusive. I don't think it's unfair, necessarily, but I also want my work to stand up against any other work on the same topic on its merit. Let everyone talk to all the same people I talked to and bring it, and we'll see who is better.

    I actually think that's more competitive than trying to restrict access to a source.

    That doesn't mean you should share information, willingly, like others suggested on this thread, which is downright silly.
