The current Washington team needs to ditch “Curly Ws” immediately.

The worst are the young writers and hed writers who think this is being creative.

On an unrelated note, in the early 1990s I covered high school sports for a paper in South Jersey.
An older fellow from another paper - not very old, just older than me, probably in his 30s back then - used to use these horrible, antiquated monikers.
He'd refer to wrestlers as 'mat me,' swimmers as 'tank men,' and basketball players as 'net men' or 'cagers.'
It was infuriating to read his stuff.

Whenever I see that Nats' cursive W, I think of this man.

What's different about the Warriors, it seems, is how long it went without any such abbreviation. This is a 72-year-old franchise, a charter member.

Yeah, I hate "Nats," too. Always have.

Not nearly as dumb as “Fightins” (as in Fightin’ Phils).

There were too many Cardinals in St. Louis so they were referred to as Redbirds and Big Red.

It’s still painfully thirsty for a multinational corporation to use the term this way. Like putting Chance the Rapper on the cover of the magazine. It’s akin to the Wendy’s twitter account insulting people. Just cringe-worthy.
