NFL teams should play games two weeks apart.

Overuse injuries are common in every sport except the most violent sport on the planet. It's exempt.

How about playing once a month? Everyone will be well rested.

This story from September doesn't offer hard data but cites the NFL as saying Thursday night injury rates are no more prevalent than Sunday games.

This graf was interesting though, and pretty much goes to the heart of my post: it seems an NFL body is getting back to normal on Wednesday at the earliest and now you only have a few hours to be in peak form for Thursday night.

If not addressed, the accumulation of physical and mental fatigue, without the proper recovery, can negatively influence later performance. According to Fergus Connolly, past director of elite performance for the San Francisco 49ers and author of Game Changer, that process of physical recovery generally takes three days, barely enough for the Thursday game.

That makes a lot of sense.

Of course, the only reason football games are played weekly and the seven days is the standard on which to base recovery time is because football games were always played weekly. There's never been any research done to show what amount of time is best for recovering from playing football.
