Interesting question - as a writer, who would you rather cover - the Lakers or the Warriors? I'd personally go with the Lakers, but in the biz these days, getting a new gig probably buys you two years, staying where you're at is a risk.

Oh that's not even a question. One has LaVar Ball. That's all you need to know to take the other.

Just for anyone who is curious about these things: Tim Kawakami, the sports columnist who left the Mercury News to become The Athletic Bay Area editor, said on the Sports Illustrated media podcast that one of the reasons he took the job was because he felt that the "Merc" headed over an inevitable cliff. Something to be mindful of, especially if you are older, more experienced and more expensive.

I read that Dieter Kurtenbach was hired, as he put it, to be sports columnist at Bay Area News Group. Did he replace one of the longtime columnists, Purdy or Kawakami?

Purdy retired. Kawakami heads up The Athletic in the Bay area and Marcus Thompson followed him. So, yeah, in the course of a month, BANG had no full-time columnist.
