Here's one last 2016 passing for all you grief porn lovers, mourning the death of people you don't know.

Sure, she was more famous in the UK than here, but she was famous!



Just wait until Pixie Geldolf passes away...

 

I honestly just don't understand any of this.

This woman was on two magazine covers in Europe - and for the life of me I can't understand why anybody cares if she dies.

The whole list of 2016 dead celebrities - you all don't know these people. They acted in movies, or threw a ball, or sang. I just do not understand why it affects you when they die. Your life isn't changing.

 

Or it is changing, and instead of exploring the complex forces at work, this is handy mental shorthand for people to express angst.

Zsa Zsa married Freddie Prinze? I knew I wasn't hip anymore, but . . .

 

It was Freddie Prinze Jr. She was cougaring.

 

I don't see what's so hard to understand about this. People feel connections to people they don't know, whether it's for a love of their art, an admiration, or just a sense of familiarity. When that famous person dies, a lot of us feel that loss.

Music is a big part of my life, and there was probably no one who was more significant in developing my musical tastes and appreciation than David Bowie. He put out his best album in decades and then dropped dead days later. That was pretty hard to take. The fact that I hadn't met him didn't mean his life had no meaning to me.

As for the lesser stars... the fact that you didn't know about them doesn't mean no one else does. I'm a big Bob Geldof fan. His family turned into a shitshow years ago, and Peaches' death was the last bit of a string of tragedy there. It was a sad situation. I wasn't wringing my hands about it on social media, but her death was pretty fucking sad.

Obviously, there has been a lot of melodramatic bullshit this year. I saw a "Dammit, 2016, haven't you hurt us enough?!?" post on Facebook because the ex-girlfriend of the singer from Radiohead died. I mean, c'mon. But overall, I get it.

Put another way -- I didn't know spnited, SF Express, Frank Ridgeway or Arnold Babar personally. I didn't know who any of them really were until they were gone. It doesn't mean I shouldn't feel lessened by their loss.

 

We interacted with SFexpress, spnited, and others in a fairly significant way. Highly doubtful you had that same interaction with David Bowie. Or Peaches Geldof.

 

Luckily, no one will die once 2016 ends.
