The Charlotte Observer is looking for a reporter to join our team covering the NFL's Carolina Panthers. The ideal candidate is a competitive, driven storyteller who works well with a team of reporters covering one of the most popular topics in our market. Experience covering the NFL is a plus, but clips that demonstrate reporting of unique angles, storytelling, breaking news and the ability to handle a demanding beat with skill and style are more important. Duties include producing stories and analysis for the Observer's website, charlotteobserver.com, and the printed Charlotte Observer, shooting and appearing in videos, and participating in a soon-to-be-launched Panthers podcast. We're looking for someone who can be a dynamic presence in social media, in video and on the podcast, as well as in print. We're looking for someone who has built a strong social media audience. The Panthers are coming off a Super Bowl season and feature MVP Cam Newton and former NFL defensive player of the year Luke Kuechly. That high profile means the successful candidate will compete with national media every day. Salary is commensurate with experience. To be considered, send a resume and no more than five examples of your best writing (links are OK) plus links to video/social media work to: mpersing@charlotteobserver.com

It goes without saying this will draw a ton of interest.

What a great goddamn city to live and work in. Good luck to the nine million people who put in for this one. The former beat guy just got hired at SI, I believe. The same SI that just laid off Don Banks and many others.

Main beat guy (Joe Person) still the Observer's main beat guy. Jonathan Jones was second beat guy, but a damn good second beat guy.

BTW, the McClatchy publishing center in Charlotte is in the process of adding more papers from the chain under its umbrella. Openings exist (or will very soon) for a wire editor and a designer.

Joe Person: Absolutely, positively good people. And I didn't just put it out there for pun's sake.

And, yeah, the deskers in Charlotte are going to get busier. Quickly, from what I hear. Between any possible positions there and the sports desk position in Chattanooga, there's a few opportunities out there right now for sports designers in the Southeast looking to move up....

BT, are those positions for news, sports or some of each? A few people in my neck of the woods (either they're out of work or DO have jobs but are looking for something that might be more stable) might be interested.

    Some of each.

A wire editor will be compiling all the sports wire roundups one night, possibly doing the news briefs and deciding what news stories to run as separates the next night.

The designer can be doing a combination of news/sports/features pages . . . all in one shift. A typical shift for a sports designer would be one paper's sports section (4-5 hours of work), and then that paper's local and business pages (2-3 hours of work). Plus taking over the rest of the A section (1A designer works 11-7) and making tweaks and typesetting most of that section.

It's busy. The days of spending 2-3 hours on a gorgeous section front are gone.

Been there, done that. It's a train wreck every night. Get out while you're alive.

Been told the Observer wants to hire a woman to be Joe's No. 2 and they already have one on staff who's covered the Panthers off and on. The belief is the Observer will just promote from within.

They did the same thing when Jim Utter left for motorsport.com. Promoted in-house.

Hire has been made. A woman. Not in-house.

Jourdan Rodrigue is the hire. She has been covering Penn State for the Centre Daily Times. She let it be known Sunday on the Twitter that she was making the move.
