Charleston Southern players say 30-plus teammates suspended for FSU game

    Breaking out this story.

Charleston Southern players suspended for using book money in bookstore for pencils and other non-book items.

I just think it's funny that this is a violation. The real crime is the prices that companies charge for textbooks. Those guys should all be in prison.

No way all 30 are suspended for the same game.

There's a bit of an explanation here (although the first sentence is poorly constructed and confusing as hell):

Sapakoff: Charleston Southern football growing pains likely to continue

"Approximately 16 players have missed a game with new one-game suspensions tied to Saturday’s game at No. 3 Florida State and beyond in response to improper use of scholarship account funds at the CSU bookstore. Under silly NCAA guidelines that over-police spending and show why full cost of attendance stipends are necessary, athletes are supposed to use scholarship money only on books, not things such as clothing, electronic equipment or snacks.

"Better idea: Explain exactly how a policy crackdown happened to come about just as the football season was getting underway instead of making it look like football players are suddenly running amuck.

    "Meet Ashton Turner.

"The Gardner-Webb University grad (Class of 2011) is CSU’s new Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, hired last fall. Despite her youth, she already has served as compliance director at Liberty University for three years and Samford for one.

"Obviously, Turner, as past compliance directors at South Carolina and Clemson have done, has established a stricter standard.

“You could say that,” Small said. “Definitely that was a part of this. You think you’ve been doing things the way you’re supposed to and then as you look closer with fresh eyes you find out maybe that’s not the case. That certainly was our situation here.”

Or, as Chadwell said, “Any time somebody is new, they’re going to try to put their stamp on it.”

Rule No. 1 for football in the South:

Don't ever fucking go to the bookstore.

If they all have to serve the suspension now, then CSU has to decide to forfeit, right? Taking 30 scholarship players to Florida State? That can't be safe.

It's also possible that the playes may have bribed the new Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance to let them miss the pounding against FSU.

One thing about rules -- in my experience, it's not so much what the words say, it's how they are applied and enforced.

So if the NCAA isn't busting chops for buying pencils and calculators with book money, why push it.

Players could benefit much more by buying books and selling them to students than buying other supplies.

Using scholarship money to buy things to do actual school work? Can't have that.

Including the entire starting offensive line. From the article, it sounds almost like the players are doing it as an Eff You to the compliance office. They were given the option of being suspended this week or next, which is a conference game, and picked this one.
