The school district I graduated from used to allow subs as young as 19. They could be granted "emergency certification" if there was a shortage of teachers (and there often was in a big school district in Western Kansas).

 

When I was a junior in high school, we had a new English/journalism teacher join the faculty. (No, this is not my own Poin story!) She was 22 or 23, fresh out of college, and she really struggled getting respect from students because she was so young, and she looked young, and she was hot.

I can't imagine throwing a 19-year-old to the high school wolves. Some of the students a 19-year-old sub would be teaching would be the same age as him/her. That's cray.
