All-purpose running restaurant advice thread

Wanted to ask on the Restaurant/Food Rant thread, but had the idea it would get lost there. So I'm starting this one instead, with the idea that it can be a repository for specific desired dining experiences.

So, my query:

Anyone got a recommendation on German restaurants in D.C. D.C., because I'm going to be there; German because I want it.

 

Don't know DC as more than a very infrequent visitor.
But I was there last year and ate at Jaleo. That was really great.
Not German, but it was great.

 

If you go, get the rabbit confit.

 

Jaleo is Spanish, and I was really tempted by that. Still want German though. I'll be there three days, so I might do both.

 

It can be a pain to get to depending on where you're staying (the nearest Metro station is about a mile and a half away), but very highly recommended:

I second the nomination of Old Europe. It is indeed excellent and has been around for about 50 years which in DC is "geologic time" for a restaurant.

 

Anyone got'ny Harrisburg, Pa, recommendations?

I'm escorting the remains of a recently returned WWII pilot from Omaha to Harrisburg in mid-April, and I need to line up the trip.

 

Spent a few days in Gotham and hit a few places I hadn't been before.

1, Rogue makes really good French onion soup. Big glob of good cheese on top AND at the bottom so you're always getting cheese. Burgers are worthy too.

2, Malibu Diner has large portions (good eggs and homefries), a strong lox and bagel, and a chill vibe inside

 

I'm checking on DC recommendations with my DC friends and German colleagues.

But, if you are willing to do some sightseeing in Western Maryland, I highly, highly recommend Schmankerl Stube in Hagerstown, MD. Very authentic Bavarian food.
