Patty Duke dies. No word on the health of identical cousin Kathy

Oscar-winning former child star Patty Duke dies, age 69

 

I guess she's finally seeing some sights other than Brooklyn Heights.

 

Man. This is a very big part of my childhood. In fact, the very first movie I remember seeing at the theater was The Miracle Worker.

 

The Patty Duke Show was a regular view at home. RIP.

I was thinking about the Patty Duke Show the other day when watching Quantico. They have an actress who plays sisters and they shoot her the same way they did the Duke show. You only see the face of one and the back of the body double as they flip between the two. They are never side-by-side.

Fifty years and the technique has not changed

Just read the NYT obit. Had no idea of her personal struggles. RIP.

I also had no idea she was Sean Astin's mother.

I have a TV theme show CD and man, that brings back memories. The show itself was slightly before my time, but it's a great theme song.

 

RIP. The 'Patty Duke Show' reruns ran in the 1980s on one of our cable channels -- I think it's the one that's now Freefrom after a million name changes -- and my sister always watched it.

I knew about the Sean Astin connection. When I became aware of her, I knew she was married to John Astin, who I was a fan of through 'The Addams Family,' and I remember an Afterschool Special-type TV movie where a young Sean starred with her as a young boy being beaten by his mom.

One interesting part of her resume: She became well-know for the role of Helen Keller in 'The Miracle Worker,' and then years later when they remade it as a TV-movie, she played the teacher, Anne Sullivan, to Melissa Gilbert's Keller.

Her dad's job (newspaper editor) was a highly respected profession.
