So, MMA/UFC wasn't a fad

Almost a decade ago, the All Purpose UFC/MMA/That Kind Of Thing Thread began life. It didn't start out being called that. It was originally a thread about an MMA story that 60 Minutes did. I know because on December 11, 2006 (the day after the 60 Minutes story aired) I started the thread. See link below to the original thread.

All Purpose UFC/MMA/That Kind Of Thing Thread

I've been re-reading back some of the posts from the early days of that thread. In it some posters were arguing, "I don't like it therefore it's not a sport and it won't last". There were others (like myself) who were arguing the opposite. In fact, alot of the early days of the thread were centered around that argument. Almost a decade later, time has settle the argument. In the way I always knew it would.

You may not like it. You may think of it as carny sub-sport that is reminiscent of The Colosseum and symptomatic of the declining value of Western Civilisation. However if you were in that thread arguing ten years ago that it was a fad that would soon fade away, well, you were wrong. Now ten year later its bigger now than it was then.

I took a look at the first few pages of that thread and didn't see anyone arguing that.

It's still a disgusting roid-rager freak show, but fortunately the only impact it has on my life is that I can't go to Buffalo Wild Wings on a UFC night unless I have a police escort or a gun on the way to my car.

This seems like the most appropriate post to highlight for the 10-year anniversary thread:

Posters were arguing on SJ.com? I don't believe it.

I was referencing posts like this one of yours from Dec 14, 2006.

Since I didn't sign up until 2009, it would be difficult for that to be my post. But that's probably why you didn't show who the quote was from.

You're a stupid person and I'm done with this.

If he was, he'd accidentally arm-bar himself while patting himself on the back.

My apologies, for some reason in my head I had you confused with friend of the friendless. It was not an attempt to be deliberately disingenuous. Hell, I linked to the original quote. You're seeing a sinister intent where there was none.

Also, I have never claimed to a great intellect (on a good day I'm just smart enough to know that I'm not that smart).

You guys want to see gloating, wait 10 years until Tiger wins his 19th major at the 2026 Masters and I dig up the thread about Tiger being finished where I was arguing he was fine. Oh how I'll gloat.

Starting this thread, ten years after the original, could be dismissed as little more than me taking an opportunity to engage in unseemly gloating. I can see that.

There is a wider point though, and it goes beyond just a ten year old thread on this forum. Among a certain type of older journalist there was a visceral reaction against MMA. They would dismiss it as an activity practiced by thugs for the enjoyment of other thugs . There was also often a kind of intellectual arrogance on display. Their arguments could often be boiled down to nothing more sophisticated than, "I'm smart and I don't like this new thing. Therefore it's an illegitimate non-sport and a fad that won't last. Perhaps we should ban it."

Sometimes they held the untenable position that while MMA was unadulterated savagery boxing was a proper sport. On occasion they were even boxing writers.

At the time, when you're arguing against people who have already made up their minds you can't win. What I can do now ten years later, and this isn't just resurrecting a ten year old thread but instead a ten year old media debate, is prove that I was right about it not being a fad and that those who argued (sometimes with certainty and zeal) that it would be were wrong. Time hasn't proven me right because I'm smarter than those people. I wasn't being facetious in an earlier post when I said that I make no claims of superior intelligence. I don't, and I really will be the first person to tell you that I'm not that smart.

The reason I was right in this argument was because I knew what I was talking about and those who had the opposing view point often didn't. They were basing their argument off feelings and personal preferences rather than facts.
