For the first time in 25 years I'm not 15 minutes from Tahoe. I'm in Tahoe. Had a rough time at the Hyatt casino last night. Might try again at the Hard Rock or Harrah's tomorrow. Surprised to find out that the iconic CalNeva Lodge is shut down, pending uncertain renovation plans.

No way! Stayed there as a kid once, and we were thrilled with the idea that it straddled the state line. It was drawn on the bottom of the pool, and we got such a kick out of swimming across the border.

Was just talking about this place with my brothers and nieces/nephews the other day, as it had come up that my oldest brother had been in Tahoe not too long ago.

Found a SacBee article from Dec. 22 which says the reopening is scheduled for May 26. But the reopening was supposed to be Dec. 2014 then Dec. 2015 (both coinciding with Frank Sinatra's birthday).

You're in Tahoe? Give me 15 minutes and I'll be right over.

Well, I don't ski but I excel in apres ski and making deposits at the casino.

Not really. Tahoe is a ski resort and water sports area with gambling as a sidelight. Laughlin was some water sports but is probably 90 percent casino based.

Best thing about Tahoe besides the beauty? 2 hrs from SF. (without traffic)
