Do you love baseball? Do you love writing about baseball? Do you love the St. Louis Cardinals? Then we have the job for you! The St. Louis Cardinals are looking for a Senior Editor for the Cardinals monthly magazine.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Execute all facets of editorial production – acting independently and as part of a team, as deadlines dictate – for a 120-plus page monthly magazine, a 200-plus page annual yearbook, an annual team calendar and a variety of other editorial projects generated by a department producing more than $1.7 million in annual gross revenue.

Essential Functions of the Job:

• Write up to two compelling, evocative feature stories (2,000-plus words) for each issue of the magazine and tight, bright copy for two to four “departments” in each issue.
• Research and generate three to four feature-story ideas for each issue of the magazine, assign the stories to freelance writers, “coach” the writers from concept through submission, provide supplemental material/sources as needed, discuss necessary revisions, edit the story to “plate-ready” standards.
• Divide final-editing responsibilities with the staff’s other editor for each issue of the magazine: 7-10 major features and 10-12 departments per issue. Rewrite as necessary to ensure final copy meets department’s superior standards. Write inspired headlines and cutlines for each feature and department. Perform multiple rounds of proofreading, from start of final production through printing.
• Work with team photographers to plan photo coverage for magazine features.
• Perform all of the above tasks for the annual team Yearbook – a 200- to 350-page book project published at midseason; and the annual team calendar – a collectible, premium-quality showpiece published in November.

Education and Experience Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or English, or related field
• 7+ years’ experience covering a professional sports team for a weekly/monthly sports magazine or a mid to large market newspaper; experience in editing and writing positions at a monthly magazine or daily newspaper, with responsibilities as a beat writer/features writer and high-level editing position.
• 7+ years’ experience as a features writer covering a major professional sports team
• 7+ years’ experience interviewing professional athletes, club officials, and other baseball-industry employees
• 3+ years’ experience planning content and assigning stories to writers and free-lance contributors.
• 3+ years’ experience assisting with coordination of layout and final editorial production.
• A proven track record of superior news/creative judgment and the instincts to identify stories and develop them on the fly
• Advanced interviewing skills, with the ability to put subjects at ease while developing trustworthy relationships that yield unique content for the club’s publications.
• Experience as a copy-desk “slot” editor, with advanced knowledge of AP style, literary and compositional style, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Advanced knowledge of a Macintosh computer using a wide variety of publishing and business-related software programs.
• An extensive portfolio of clips and work samples demonstrating baseball expertise and knowledge of Cardinals history.
• Advanced research skills using record books, registers, authoritative Web tools and other sources for editing/fact-checking responsibilities and content development.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or English, or related field
• 5-7 years’ experience in editing and writing positions at a monthly magazine or mid- to large-market daily newspaper.
• 5-7 years’ experience as a features writer covering a major professional sports team
• 5-7 years’ experience interviewing professional athletes, club officials, and other baseball-industry employees
• 2 years’ experience planning content and assigning stories to writers and free-lance contributors.
• 2 years’ experience assisting with coordination of layout and final editorial production.
• A proven track record of superior news/creative judgment and the instincts to identify stories and develop them on the fly
• A demonstrated ability to adapt a story’s narrative to fit the medium – daily (online club media), monthly (Cardinals Magazine), or annual (Cardinals Yearbook).
• A comprehensive knowledge of baseball (current and historical) and an in-depth familiarity of the Cardinals
• Advanced research skills using print, online, and broadcast media and credible/authoritative Web tools to develop and ensure accuracy of content
• Advanced knowledge of AP style, literary and compositional style, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
• Proficiency using a Macintosh computer in a variety of publishing-related software applications, including Quark Express, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.

BDC, It was a combination of a dream job, but good luck finding all of those requirements in one person. Like Wicked said, it sounds like the only thing missing was "Your name MUST be..."

 

I thought Stan McNeil landed this gig about a year ago. I don't know Stan well, but always seemed to be a good dude and I figured he would be a perfect fit for this. Anyone know what happened??

I am a St. Louisan who now is working in Washington, D.C., in a communications job outside of the business. I am enjoying the new gig up here. A year ago, I would have walked to St. Louis for this job from Indianapolis, where I lived at the time.
