I'm old enough to remember his later NBC work. My understanding is the NFL Network's edited telecast Friday of the first Super Bowl will have the audio of Mr. Simpson's NBC Radio Network play-by-play as the soundtrack.

Vitale told a good story in his first book. Dickie was just breaking in at ESPN and on one of the early telecasts, he was paired with Simpson. Vitale was talking so much, and at the wrong times, he ordered Vitale's microphone muted for a period of time to teach him a lesson.

I remember the man as really smooth. RIP.
