We're bringing our design desk back in-house, so we have to hire 7 good designers -- and fast. The design desk will debut March 1.

Follow the links and don't haste if you're interested:

JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Seeking Lead Designer for 7-person Desk

JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Seeking Night Page Designers

    JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Seeking Swing-shift designer

    To apply:

Send cover letter, resume and samples of work to Michael Symes, Copy Desk Chief at msymes@reviewjournal.com. Please put RJ Design Desk in subject line.

Yes, at least one of those is going to be heavily involved in nightly sports design.

Any thoughts on bringing those back who were laid off/let go? And will it just be one or two dedicated sports designers because it would seem that this would be a big section and a huge lift for just one person. IMHO

Ability to photoshop a Hitler mustache on Hillary Clinton is a bonus.

Will there be any sports reporter openings soon? I see there has been quite a few openings here. Just wondering if a sports reporter opening is on the way.

Our sports openings will be three part-time agate clerks (best for LV area college students -- just email me at bbradley@reviewjournal.com) and a spring and a summer intern to cover the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. I'm about to post that one right now.

    Two questions:

    1) Will there be regional bias in the hire.

    2) What reassurance do applicants have that this will last? I've seen papers before ramp things up like this only to fold a year later (Orange County comes to mind).

    Two answers:
    1. I'm not sure. I'm not the one doing the hiring for designers. I do know that some of the people who were laid off a year ago have applied again. But I also know we want to recreate the best design desk we can after a rocky six months.

    2. I can make no assurances to anyone. We're the news business. That said, we were cut to the bone prior to our first 2015 sale to make us look lean and mean. We're bringing back a 7-person design desk, which every person on it will be necessary. And I'm very encouraged by all of the hires that our publisher was already planning to make prior to the latest sale.

This almost seems like the best Bill can say. Whether it's bluster or not he's right about the fact it's the newspaper business and there's no guarantee on anything. Particularly if there will be a newspaper business in the next 10 years. And being in Gatehouse and being laid off I know what those people have went through. I might be interested if not for 1) been at my job for about six months and like it so far, so I don't want to move, 2) the turmoil going there is scary to a degree and 3) not sure I'd want to move to Vegas. I'd have to think long and hard personally.

Yeah, I'm intrigued but moving to Vegas scares me a bit. If there are layoffs, what is a displaced journalist to do, work at the casinos?
