POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Daily Times, a seven-day morning newspaper in Maryville, Tenn., is searching for a full-time sports editor to lead its award-winning sports department. Located outside of Knoxville, The Daily Times puts an emphasis on presenting prep sports with a big-time feel, while also providing our readers in-depth coverage of college athletics from Div. III Maryville College and D1 University of Tennessee. The primary job is to supervise — recruit, coach, manage, edit, inspire — the freelance and full-time sports staff to produce a high-standard digital and print product. The job also entails coverage and content production. A get it done and get it done right attitude is essential.


KEY JOB SKILLS: Planning and coordinating storytelling for digital and print

Analyzing traffic patterns, researching solutions and incorporating new ideas for our coverage.

Enhancing social media efforts to reach a wider audience as a promotional tool box.

Collaborating with all levels of the newsroom, advertising and design hub.

Represent the paper in a professional manner.

Familiarity with the AP’s sports coding system is a plus.

A bachelor’s degree in communications or an equivalent in education or experience is required for this position.

FAQ: This position does not require page layout, though we've found that skillset is helpful in budgeting the section. It does not require camera or photo skills, but knowing how to smartly use a smartphone for breaking news/photo/video is still a plus.

We do not return the pdf submitted with resume.
It's amazing the games people try to play with their clips when questions get asked.
I have no idea why, or even why you'd delete the pdf of your clips you submit and ask for it to be returned, but it does happen.
We just make clear from start, what you submit is what you submit.

Would you be willing to ballpark the pay?

 

I'm finding it a little odd that the sports ed listed on the paper's website is the one accepting the resumes....unless he's being promoted to a position in which he would do the hiring. Perhaps it's just me but isn't it a bit strange for someone to be hiring his own replacement?

 

The current sports editor is moving to another desk in the newsroom, is all. I doubt Marcus is going through the hiring process on his own for the replacement.
